Yum Yum Peking Duck

Yum Yum Peking Duck, New Farm

It was a friend's birthday (TQ) on Sunday and a group of us (8 in total) went to Yum Yum Peking Duck for dinner. HL, who was the organiser had already made a booking for two sets of Peking Duck ($55 each).

The Peking Duck consists of two/three course meal:
- First: crispy Peking duck skin, cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce wrapped in a thin slice of pancake
- Second: an option between duck 'Sang Choy Bow' or duck cooked in plum sauce
- Third: Duck bones' soup

Since we had ordered two sets of Peking Duck, we managed to try both the second course meals.

Peking Duck
The first course:- Peking duck wrapped in pancake. Pretty good! The duck's skin was roasted well and quite crispy. HL, who had been to Yum Yum Peking Duck in Darra said that this was not as good as the one there. In between eight of us, I think each of us had about 3-4 portions of the peking duck.

Duck Sang Choy Bow
Sang Choy Bow is usually a dish of stir-fry meat and vegetables served with lettuce. To eat it, just fold the lettuce, 'like a spring roll'. This dish did not receive good reviews among us. There was too much onions in this dish that overpowered the duck and it was lacking in flavour too.

Duck in plum sauce
On the opposite end, most people like this dish. The duck meat was deep fried in a batter (quite crispy) and cooked with red capsicum and onions. The sauce was quite good, tasting quite similar to sweet and sour sauce.

We had another duck dish too, which is the soup. The soup was delicious, even though appearance wise, it can look quite unappetizing (that's why no pic taken!). =)

Mapo tofu
We ordered additional dish: Mapo tofu. Hmmm.... this dish was OK. It tasted all right but I felt that it is not as authentic and spicy as it should be. The tofu was fresh and the chef was generous in putting in pickled vegetables and pork pieces.

Chicken and salted fish fried rice
The final dish we had was the chicken and salted fish fried rice. It was a simple dish cooked with salted fish and chicken pieces, no fault can be found here.

Overall, all of us had a good time there. After dinner, we went somewhere else for dessert. =)

The verdict:
  • can be hit and miss for the food
  • good service

  1. As a special treat, we always have loved Yum Yum Peking Duck at Darra. No frills, but always yummy! They don't offer the plum sauce option there, but it's probably for the best!
