First meal for 2021

Image
Sassafras, Paddington Happy 2021 everyone! This is my first post of the year after one long year hiatus from the food blog. As I am writing this blog, we are currently into Day 2 of 3 Brisbane lockdown and currently having a donut score of 0 case. Yay! Anyhow, back to Sassafras. I have heard of this place years ago and we finally made it here. Along the stretch with King Tea and Hai Hai ramen, you will not miss this one. This cafe is divided into indoor and outdoor sections, with lots of plant at the back. It was unfortunate that the outdoor setting was fully booked that day as I know the kids would really enjoy it. It has become a routine for me to sign up electronically for everyone and Sassafras is equipped with the QR code. What did we order for our first brunch of the year? First up, was the little people's breakfast; pancakes, strawberries and maple syrup ($7.90) ( I think this is one of the affordable kid's breakfast around ). Miss G requested for blueberries instead of ...

Alcove Cafe and Deli

Image
Alcove Cafe and Deli, Wilston It was a spe cial Monday because t hat Monday wa s the last Monday Grace will be our only child. She knew that she would have a sibling soon but I don't think she unders tand how a new addition will change her life quite signific antly. As she normally goes to childcare the rest of the week, I wanted to have breakfast with her and w e chose Alcove. Parking can be quite a ch allenge in this area but eventually manage to find some street parking. It is a counter service, so Mr had to order once we knew what to have. Unfortunately there is no kid's menu ava ilable so we tried to order somethi ng that she may have.  Mr o rdered the ir ' Alcove Br eakfast ' that came with po ached eggs and the usual lots. We would like to change to scrambled eggs but unfortunately they only make either poached or fried eggs. In the end, Mr went with the fried eggs hoping that Grace would have some. The rest (bacon, haloumi and sweet potato mash...

Koto Sanpo

Image
Koto Sanpo, Brisbane CBD The second restaurant that we recently tried in FudoDori was Koto Sanpo. I am a big fan of anything match a and was excite d to be checking out this place. We arrived early around their opening hour of 11.30 am and the y were already quite busy. We were seated and after brow sing their extensive menu, Mr went to the counter for our order. As we were there for lunch, we ordered savoury meals rather than their sweets or desserts. But first up, a drink of match a is a must and for a basic mat cha latte, there are options of white chocolate, yuzu honey, rocky road or even c aramel matcha latte . I think it is best to try their basic matcha latte and it came in a rather huge ceramic bowl. I could not fault their mat cha latte at all. The latte was creamy and most importantly, not overly sweet and there ' s still hint of bitterness of matcha which is how I like mine.  Now for our main meals, Mr tried their chicken karaage curry ($15.80) and surpri...

Jacaranda Coffee Lane

Image
Jacaranda Coffee Lane, West End Last term, we enrolled Grace at Queensland Ballet and enrolled her in the Early Years Dance class, which she seems to enjoy. As we will be quite busy these coming months with a new addition, we decided to stop and hopefully restart again next term. As part of a celebration that she completed a term, we decided to have breakfast at Jacaranda Coffee Lane, after a visit at the West End Library! (Yes, trying to find excuse to eat out... ) We were thankful to have seats readily available that morning, and the service was prompt and friendly. I noted that there are some colouring pens/crayons available and Grace was happy to do some colouring (well, attempted to). The menu here is so interesting with some Asian influence and I could not wait to dig in! They also have kids meal available and ordered the ' Scrambled Eggs on cheesy toast ' ($6.50) for Grace. Among other cafes, I think Jacaranda has the best value for kids meal.  Her scrambl...

Home Cafe Ashgrove

Image
Home Cafe Ashgrove, Ashgrove Quite a while ago, Grace and myself went out for brekkie at Home Cafe before her weekly music class. We have driven past this cafe multiple times but have yet to set foot here. Parking can be tricky I think but we just parked next to a park or you could park outside Coles. As we walked into the cafe, I was overjoyed to see a small children's play area with some toys. This has certainly got Grace excited! As we await for our meals, she kept herself occupied in the kid's playroom.  Yay for kid's menu! Among the choices, I ordered pancakes ($8.50) for her, and it came with two pieces of pancake with maple syrup. Grace managed to have some of the pancakes and I think she quite likes it. She can be rather picky with her food and I was just glad she ate them. As for myself, I had the ' Crispy Potato Rosti ' ($18.90) that came with pesto scrambled eggs, ham, relish and sour cream. The rosti was amazing as they were i...

Chapter IV

Image
Chapter IV, Paddington Me: "Do you want some soft shell crab?" Mr: "For breakfast?" Me: "Ya, I know a place that has it... " So, we both ventured off to Chapter IV at Paddington. As it was on a weekday, parking was relatively easy and Chapter IV was still quiet. I do note that they have a play area and hoping to bring Grace here one day to try out their kids meal for $10.  Their menu is quite extensive. Mr had the ' soft shell crab eggs benedict '  while I ordered the ' crispy potato and cheddar hash cakes '.   The food smell so delicious when the plates were served in front of us. His tower of crispy soft shell crab can certainly make you salivate... and I quickly grabbed one of the legs, and it was indeed crispy. I could not remember the base of the Benedict sauce but it was quite interesting, together with the mix salsa of tomatoes, beans and corn. Their eggs were poached to perfection. The presentation ...

huskk cafe

Image
Huskk Cafe, Grange Huskk is a new cafe recently sprouted in Grange. In a short period of time, we visited this place twice. First time, just Grace and myself and on our second trip, we took my mom and grandma here when they came to visit from Penang. This cafe looks bright, open and lovely. What is better is that they have a small corner of children's play area as pictured! Grace managed to keep herself occupied while waiting for our food.  On our visit, I ordered the pancake from the children's menu and it was gingerbread flavour (due to pre-Christmas). It came in a generous amount and quite lovely but the ginger flavour may be a tad strong for Grace. She had a few bites.  As for myself, I had the banana bread pudding slice and it was heavenly. Still quite moist and not too sweet which was good. On our second trip, there was more of a wait by then since it was the weekend but thankfully not too long. Mr and Grandma both had the scrambled e...

Bam Bam Bakehouse

Image
Bam Bam Bakehouse, Gold Coast I am probably one of the last foodie to have tried Bam Bam Bakehouse! It has been on my wish list for a very long time, and one day Mr suggested we go to the coast since we are both not working over the weekend. It is a rare opportunity and I told him we must visit Bam Bam. Hehe!  We used GPS to navigate ourselves there and the bakehouse is situated in a fairly interesting location, next to a children's park and playground (bonus!). Parking can be quite tricky until we realised we could have parked next to the playground from the back. It was already quite packed when we got there in the morning, but thankfully still have seats available. Their menu does seem to have some Asian influenced such as the 'Egg nasi, karaage chicken burger or even the pork belly banh mi' which in hindsight, I probably should have ordered one of them.  Are you a Barbie or a Mermaid fan? I ended up ordering the Barbie hot chocolate which consisted of ros...

Willow and Spoon

Image
Willow and Spoon, Wilston Willow and Spoon is one of my favourite cafe to go to in the Northside. I remember visiting this place with my housemate last time, and quite a lot has changed since for the better. We have been to this place twice in a matter of few months apart, and on this occasion we brought Grace along! Lucky her, there is a small play area set up at the garden next to the back deck.  Willow and Spoon changed their menu since our last visit but the favourite 'The Willow' seem to be on the menu always. Who can resist it though? Cured pork belly with truffle scrambled eggs! Yum Yum Yum! Mr was just so happy to see this platter of food served in front of him. The pork belly was tender and flavourful, and he certainly was a satisfied man after that! My other dish then was poached eggs on haloumi with turkish bread. You can never complain when the eggs were poached to perfection. We ordered a side dish of hash brown and just a little disappointed that those...
