Makanan Indonesia

Makanan Indonesia, West End

Finally the three of us (MXM, AQ and myself) had time to catch up over dinner this weekend. We were supposed to have a get together last week but I was away that time. There's not too many halal restaurants you can found around here and luckily, 'Makanan Indonesia' serves halal food.

Makanan Indonesia's Menu
It took quite a while for us to decide what to order. I'm really not familiar with Indonesian food at all and I don't think they are the same as Malaysian food. Finally we decided on...

Chicken satay - $ 10.90
The satays are definitely not as good or even similar to the ones I had back in Malaysia. The peanut sauce is sweet (can see some kecap manis) without hint of spiciness and the chicken is marinated differently.

Chicken koay teow goreng / Fried koay teow - $ 11.50
This dish was pretty good, it was MXM's favourite. It's a simple stir-fry of flat rice noodles, with chicken pieces, bean sprouts and vegetables. Not spicy though, I later realised that you have to ask them if you want the dish to be spicier.

Kari Sayur (Coconut Mixed Vegetable Curry) - $ 10.50
Vegetable curry is AQ's favourite for the night. It contained tofu, eggplant, celery and carrots. Flavourwise, the curry was all right, not spicy (in my opinion) and you can definitely taste the coconut milk. We ordered some coconut rice to accompany the dishes. There is some hints of coconut taste in the rice but definitely not as strong as the one I had in nasi lemak.

Ayam Goreng Mentega (Fried Chicken with Sweet Soy, Butter and Lemon) - $ 14.50
This dish was all right, small fried chicken pieces cooked in sweet soy (kecap manis) with hints of lemon flavour. Again, I think it's more to the sweet side of the scale. Maybe because of all the sweet soy they put in the dishes. One thing you will realised is that they put fried onions on all the dishes, even the rice.

For desserts:
Fried ice cream

Cendol

Shaved ice with lychee
It seems that the winner for dessert is fried ice cream. Good choice by AQ! MXM had the shaved ice with lychee and I ordered the cendol. The cendol cannot be compared to the ones back home, the shaved ice was too coarse and it needed a stronger flavour of coconut milk and gula melaka.

Overall, it was a good experience and fun catching up with the other two friends. =) Not to forget, there is a guy who sings and plays keyboard during dinner ... enjoy some music!

The verdict:

  • OK food
  • good service
